1. All you need to know about Botulinum toxin (BTX) treatment

Dr Marie-Helene Marion, as a European expert in this treatment for 20 years, will answer to the main questions you may ask about BTX.

Which conditions can be treated with BTX?
Lines (wrinkles): BTX injections can erase the lines of the forehead, the frown lines and the crow’s feet around the eyes. These lines are mainly due to the repetitive contraction of the facial muscles when expressing emotions.

Excessive Sweating: Hyperhydrosis is characterised by an excessive amount of sweating, and can affect armpits, hands, feet and more rarely the face.

Neurological conditions with muscle spasms such as dystonia, hemifacial spasm, and spasticity benefit also from BTX .

How long the effect lasts?
It depends of the dose injected. An optimum dose controls the lines and the sweating for 6 months. It may vary from 4 to 9 months depending of the severity of the symptoms.

How long its take to work?

The effect starts usually 3 to 4 days after the injection and is maximum 7 days after the treatment

What are the risks of BTX?

Injections around the eyes can rarely give a droopy eyelid or change the shape of the eyebrow..All these side effects are transient and disappear completely in 4 to 6 weeks.

Which patients are excluded from this treatment?

The treatment is not recommended for pregnant women and patients with muscle diseases.
